A look back at Cloud 2018

As we welcome in 2019, at BCC we have looked back at 2018, of all the change we have seen in the public cloud space. We’ve pulled together all of the top news stores and changes in the world of Cloud for 2018 as a recap. 1. In March, Microsoft stated its Azure cloud will be its top priority going forwards not Windows. –THE SEATTLE TIMES

2. AWS got into the hybrid cloud and on-prem game with its new ‘AWS Outposts’ hardware.–CNBC

3. Alibaba Cloud continued to expand outside of Asia and into Europe and the US. –SDX CENTRAL

4. AWS and Apple were forced to publicly deny a Bloomberg report in October that their servers had been physically bugged by the Chinese. – BLOOMBERG

5. Wikileaks published details of the alleged location of more than 100 AWS data centers, which AWS try their hardest to keep secret. –DATA CENTER KNOWLEDGE

6. The US Department of Defence announced, and accepted bids on, a decade-long $10 billion cloud computing contract, named ‘JEDI’. –DEFENSE SYSTEMS

7. The above US Pentagon contract further fuelled a battle between AWS and Oracle. –TECH CRUNCH

8. Diane Greene former founder of VMware announced she would step down as the CEO of Google Cloud. Greene, the well-respected entrepreneur, spent about three years at the head of the organisation. –VENTURE BEAT

9. Thomas Kurian, the former president of Oracle, replaces Greene atop Google Cloud.–TECH CRUNCH

10. AWS’s facial recognition technology ‘Rekognition’ came under scrutiny from human rights activists. –THE VERGE

11. IBM acquired Red Hat for $34 billion!–CNBC

12. Salesforce acquired Mulesoft for $6.5 billion. –FORTUNE

13. Microsoft acquired GitHub for $7.5 billion in June. –THE VERGE
